About the artist

Born, raised and residing in Houston Texas; Gilbert “Gil” Sanchez has been creating since childhood. In 3rd grade Gil was encouraged to paint a classroom mural. This kicked off the artistic journey. His 5th grade teacher stirred his interest in writing, and he has not stopped since. He went on to studied under Floyd Newsumat at the University of Houston Downtown and Ken Luceat San Jacinto Jr. College.

Artist statement:

I don’t know much, but I know me, mostly.

Working in various mediums, I draw from life experiences. The art I create is a living archive and more than just creative expression—it’s autobiographical. Each piece begins with a driven responsive emotion, evolving into poetry and dimensional art. Thus, my art consists of two parts. I see memories as snapshots, and my art captures these fleeting moments.

After reading the quote “There’s no such thing as good painting about nothing” from Mark Rothko, many years ago. I knew I was not alone in my artistic beliefs. All I create has significant meaning to me. I welcome you and hopefully we make a connection along the way.
